There's no real way to describe the 11th annual For the Love of Chocolate Gala — which happened on a positively balmy Saturday in Chicago on Feb. 27 — as anything other than a spectacle.
Chocolatine’s Rieko Wada enrobes wine or champagne in six coats of chocolate, then covers it in fruits and nuts for customers seeking a special holiday gift item.
From the very first days Rieko Wada opened her Chocolatine’s shop in Schaumburg, Ill. in 2006, the chocolatier focused on mixing artistic expressions, her Japanese heritage, perfectionism and chocolate to create unique confections.
What better way to celebrate 20 years of turning out legions of formally trained pastry chefs and chocolatiers than with a Legion of Honor party for one of the French Pastry School’s co-founders, Sébastien Canonne?
More than 800 people, many dressed up as gangsters and flappers, gathered at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22. Together, supporters raised more than $180,000, up at least $70,000 from last year. Proceeds will help fund student scholarships for The French Pastry School’s L’Art de la Patisserie and L’Art du Gateau programs.
The fashion show featured models floating down the runway in dresses literally good enough to eat. The tables were lined with gourmet foods available for the taking. And by the end, no one was ready to leave.
