Bosch Packaging Technology’s latest vertical form, fill and seal (VFFS) machine — the SVE 3220 DZ — features the Yamato multihead weigher ADW-O-0314S and incorporates several operating improvements.
North American confectionery, bakery and other free-flowing goods producers can now enjoy the premium quality and attractive shape of the larger Doy Zip bag thanks to the extension of Bosch’s proven SVE platform. Coupled with the Yamato weigher, the new solution offers high productivity, operational efficiency and format flexibility. The SVE 3220 DZ is capable of handling Doy Zip formats up to 320 millimeters high and 250 millimeters wide.
Additionally, the machine produces seven most popular bag styles, such as pillow, gusseted, block bottom, corner seal, full corner seal, 3-sided seal as well as Doy and Doy Zip, with changeovers from pillow to Doy Zip taking as little as 30 minutes. The bagger components also employ color codes to make changeovers clear and reproducible, eliminating operator errors and contributing to a Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) approach for maximized uptime.
Hole-punch feature brings more flexibility for different film types
Implementing a novel approach for a broader utilization of flexible films, Bosch has introduced a continuous motion process for punching holes and sealing the gussets of a Doy bag together. The new hole-punching unit allows the gusset to be sealed inner layer to inner layer, providing wider options for packaging materials. The creation of the bottom gusset of the Doy package is now matching the process of horizontal machines and can use the same popular film structures at a fraction of the footprint.

Mini slider unit ideal for small packs
Appleton, Wis.-based Presto Products, has introduced mini slider application equipment for smaller, lightweight flexible packaging such as those used in the confectionery and snack industries.
Developed at the Presto Technology and Innovation Center in Canandaigua, N.Y., the rotary insertion machine is a significant departure from Presto’s historical commercial equipment offerings. The new process utilizes a rotary motion and is capable of inserting sliders at an extremely high rate of speed.
The mini slider equipment implements a new insertion method, which eliminates the need for notching or slitting, maintaining zipper integrity throughout the process. Users will additionally appreciate its small footprint and simple set-up.
“This new technology allows users to increase their production efficiency and offer the convenience of the mini slider to consumers,” said Brad Hansen, president of the company’s Specialty Business Unit.
The development process of the mini slider involved turning a critical eye to the company’s current portfolio of equipment and identifying a smaller and lower-cost slider option as a gap.
“Everything we’ve learned in the development of the mini slider will be implemented moving forward,” Hansen said. “We are working to review all of our slider insertion methods to ensure we are providing our customers with the most convenient production process possible.”
