Cocoa Loco

Cocoa Loco became the UK’s first 100 percent Fairtrade chocolate shop.

Sarah Payne founded Cocoa Loco in 2005 as a small family business using only organic and Fairtrade ingredients to make chocolates and brownies. She made her treats at home and sold them on the Internet and at local farmers markets until finally realizing her dream of opening up her own shop.

“This is such an exciting time for us,” says Managing Director Rory Payne. “We have an amazing team that cares about the products they produce.”

The new store fits right in with its neighbors in Horsham, England. The town is a Fairtrade Town, meaning it commits itself to offering a range of Fairtrade products in shops and at community events and promotes the campaign for ethical production of goods.

The Fairtrade mission is a meaningful part of the Cocoa Loco business.

“It is so important to Rory and I that our chocolate is produced to the highest welfare and environmental standards by people who care passionately about what they do and who are paid fairly for their skills and efforts,” Payne says. “We love the fact that by working with Fairtrade we are showing our support for farmers and producers around the world and in doing so are making a positive contribution.”

The store couldn’t have opened at a better time. This month is Organic September, the UK’s celebration of all things organic.

Even after the initial excitement of Organic September and the local food and drink festival, The Big Nibble, wind down, Cocoa Loco will keep going full speed as it unveils new batches of delicious sweets for Halloween and Christmas.
