Sanders dishes out free slice of centennial cake
Chocolate Bumpy Cake boxes to be adorned with celebratory emblem
No better way to celebrate an anniversary than by having cake, Sanders Bumpy Cake to be specific. The confectionery-bakery treat, co-created by Sanders’ team of confectioners and bakers 100 years ago, has been a local favorite in the Detroit metropolitan area since then.
Come Saturday, April 27, Sanders, a division of Clinton Township, Mich.-based Morley’s Candy Makers, will be commemorating the event by offering a free slice of Chocolate Bumpy Cake at all of its Metro Detroit stores. Chocolate Bumpy Cake boxes will be adorned with a celebratory emblem for this birthday event.
Many national retailers have also joined in the celebration and will be passing along discounts to customers and highlighting the 100th birthday on their freezer doors for the next few months.
The product’s origins date back to 1913 when Sanders opened its bakery division and started making unique style cakes with their signature buttercream icing. A chocolate layer cake with buttercream piping on top and then coated in a rich fudge topping soon became a favorite. The cake was later named “Bumpy Cake” as a result of local customers coming in and requesting it by asking for the “cake with the bumps.”
Today, Sanders Bumpy Cake comes in three size: the original round layer cake, the 8X8 tea cake and the single-layer party cake. The “Bumpy” style cake has expanded to include Raspberry Bumpy, Vanilla Buttercream Bumpy and Caramel Spice Bumpy. Sanders baked goods have been sold mainly in Metro Detroit for generations, but have established a national presence over the last few years and continue to grow in popularity.
Sanders’ American lineage dates back to 1875 when Fred Sanders opened his first store in downtown Detroit. The tradition of using premium ingredients to make Sanders’ famous cakes, ice cream toppings, chocolates and caramels continues today. For more information, visit www.SandersCandy.com.
