ZEGO, a newcomer in nutritious, allergy-friendly snacks, is literally setting ‘a higher bar’ for the industry. It’s leading the way with allergen testing and reporting to improve consumer safety and health.
The company has launched new packaging for its energy bars that features a patent-pending QR-code system, which when scanned with a smart phone, provides test results from the bar’s batch, showing measurable amounts of specific allergens.
The new QR code allows consumers to have better control over their health, says Colleen Kavanagh, ZEGO co-founder.
“For example, knowing a ‘gluten-free’ product’s testing showed less than 2.5 PPM gluten compared to the FDA’s allowed 20 PPM enables very sensitive people to make safer choices,” she explains.
Although ZEGO’s sunflower seed-based bars are formulated without the eight major food allergens (including nuts, soy, dairy, and gluten), they’re made in a shared facility, where cross contamination with allergens is possible.
While most manufacturers simply place a warning of potential cross-contamination on their packaging, ZEGO is taking it a step further with tech-powered packaging as simple as a scan from a smart phone.
While sample testing doesn’t guarantee safety, ZEGO Co-founder Jonathan Shambroom says he hopes packaging like theirs will become an industry standard. “We want our customers to enjoy the great taste of ZEGO bars and equally enjoy great peace of mind.”
