A study done by researchers at Stony Brook University School of Dental Medicine found that fluoridefree BasicMints help to prevent cavities. BasicMints contain a compound called CaviStat that temporarily increases saliva production and neutralizes cavity-causing acids. Of the 200 Venezuelan children that participated in the study, 68.3% had fewer cavities than the placebo group after six months and 61.7% had fewer cavities after one year. CaviStat is patented by researchers at Stony Brook and licensed to Ortek Therapeutic Inc. Ortek plans to get U.S. Food and Drug Administration approval and begin testing the product in the U.S. this year.
