New Hope, Minn.-based Route 29 Caramels and Sweets has closed its production and warehouse facilities in Perham, reports Louis Hoglund in the Perham Enterprise Bulletin. Citing Mark Kalan, the article states that the company planned to move its equipment from Perham to New Hope, Minn. by early- to mid-May.

The decision was made in part due to the train crash of 2003, which destroyed the company’s warehouse space, preventing it from being rebuilt. The facilities’ employees were laid off on Thursday, April 2, however, most of them were offered full-time positions at the company’s headquarters in New Hope, writes Hoglund.

Perham’s Economic Development Authority will be marketing the building with the goal of finding an occupant, said Chuck Johnson, EDA director, in the article.
